Just in the U.S. alone, there are over 31 million active bloggers posting at least once per month. Imagine that, over 31 million voices, creating content and perhaps pouring out their hearts into their words, publishing that content for all the world to see, and for what reason?
Which brings me to my topic for this week's blog, "Why do I write a weekly blog?"
When I first started back in 2005 my motivation was simply to start an online diary, a virtual depository for my memories. The catalyst for this action was my daughter who turned five that year. When she was born I was given a book where I could jot down thoughts and memories about her with the goal of presenting that to her when she was an adult. Though my wife might disagree, I truly don't attach a greater weight to my thoughts and words than the next person, but I did want my daughter to have access to a medium where if she chose, she could learn more about me as a person. From talking to my friends and asking them questions about their parents or people who had great influence in their life, a recurring theme became apparent, most of their memories usually revolved around their own childhoods and their interactions with their parent or influencer. Very little information was available about their parents lives, where you might find the answers to questions such as:
- What made them choose their career path?
- What are some of their favorite books or music?
- What are their favorite hobbies?
- Who are their best friends?
- What was their childhood like?
- What were some of the influences in their life?
- Details about their faith journey or lack thereof.
- Favorite places or trips.
- And so on . . .
