God's Ways Are Not Our Ways
Did you know that our Sun is almost 93 million miles away from Earth? The ex-planet Pluto (it still stings to write that) is over 2.7 billion miles from planet Earth. Science informs us that there are undiscovered planets, galaxies and wonders beyond our knowledge at this present time. So the reason for this very short sidebar into space and distance is because of its relevance to one of my favorite verses in the Bible.
"Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55: 6-9 ESV)
It is an unfortunate facet of my personality that I am abundantly capable of inflating my own goodness and well versed at drastically minimizing my faults. I also possess the over-inflated ego and character trait of self-importance that drives me to question not only other people and their thoughts and decisions, but God Himself. There is one word that describes my propensity to complain and/or question God's authority and methods and that is pride. Pride is the trait that causes me to second-guess the Creator, the God of the universe, the One who birthed the planets, stars and space in His imagination and then spoke them into existence. The great I Am. The Alpha and The Omega. This is the God that I am questioning.
So when God in His holy word gives me a point of reference, "my thoughts are higher than the heaven is from the earth" it was meant to be a clear point of distinction that even I could understand. Not that His thoughts are as high as the moon to the earth, which by itself would be an unbelievable distance, but as far the heavens from the earth. In other words, His thoughts are beyond my finite mind to comprehend. And His Word, as powerful and life-changing as it is, is baby talk to His creation who would find it impossible to understand the depth and thoughts of our God.
